Michael Bosanko

Michael Bosanko is a photographer that has done a series on writing with light. The series, titled "We Come In Peace", is made with figures drawn with light interacting with their environment. He also does light painting with cars, and other vehicles, some abstract series', iconic movie recreations, and logos etc.

Writing With Light

By taking advantage of a dslr's ability to do a very long shutter speed, you can manipulate light into trails. Sometimes called painting with light, writing with light consists of using a dslr camera and a simple flash light to draw onto the camera's sensor paths of light that come together to create an image. Some ideas that i might want to try is to create a scene with stars above the subject as if he/she is stargazing inside a room. Or create some light orbs by swinging lights around in a circle. Examples from the internet are below.

Hyperlapse Photography

This friday for our fun project we made small simple hyperlapse videos. Similar to timelapse videos, except the camera moves too and shorter times between shots. To separate myself from the usual free hand and lack of a subject that most people did, I borrowed a friend to stand in each shot to make it seem as though he was moving without moving in the shots. Like some popular videos on youtube of hyperlapses.

Rembrandt Lighting

Rembrandt Lighting is a form of studio lighting characterized by a light pointed at a face at an angle so that one side is completely lit and only a portion of the other side of the face is lit. It can be done using a single light and a reflector or two lights to achieve a natural but still artistic look with little equipment.

This is a typical but wonderful example of Rembrandt lighting. All of the right side of her face is lit and a small portion of her left side is lit. If only a single light and no reflector was used, it is unlikely that the left side of her face would be so visible.

Using Rembrandt lighting, I made the image below, but with a different pose. The main light shone on her hair with a secondary light facing the wall to reveal her face and the background.

Studio Portraiture with David Olkarny

David Olkarny is a photographer that does a lot of portraiture work and posts his work on flickr. He does some wedding photos as well as self portraits. In his portraits wherever they are, he often uses lights to accentuate features of the picture like the subject because the subject should be the face in portraits.
On flickr, David Olkarny has disabled the downloading of his pictures. So here's a link to his Flickr account. https://www.flickr.com/photos/olkaprod/

Gif's

This is the result from a project where we made Gif's. A .gif is a short video made of a few images played in an infinite loop. Using my camera on continuous shooting, I took pictures of a couple friends doing a twirl and a jump. The burst speed of my camera allows me to take enough images from each moment to moment as the action happens so I get a relatively smooth result.

Rineke Dijkstra

Rineke Dijkstra went to a beach to photograph portraits of adolescents. Her process is to take pictures of adolescent boys and girls right at the waters edge. The background is minimal with just the water and bland sky. A flash is used to reduce contrast and separate the subject from the background as I believe she intends the ocean scene only to be a consistency for the series, not an important part of it other than that because the kids are going to the beach they are in their swimwear. The subjects are standing rather straight and facing the camera.

2nd Chances

For my second chances project, I want to do more HDR's because I feel that I rushed myself with the HDR project and I could have put more of myself into my images. I could have used some of my more personal ideas and created a much better line of work. I have some ideas for better HDR pictures.

Winter Break Post

Over winter break, I flew to San Jose, Costa Rica. On the first flight, out of Tulsa to Dallas, I was given a great view of downtown Tulsa. You could see all of the major buildings like the BOK Tower as seen as the tallest and furthest to the right building. That same flight also gave me other unique, and for me, previously unseen views during the daytime of my home town. I was able to point out highways and roads that I am familiar with. Buildings and favorite spots around town. I was even able to see my own house from the sky.
